Assignment 7

1. Go to http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/new-fantasyland/ and look around it a little bit. Now go to http://www.byteland.org/angeloflife. Now why do you think the .com website is more exciting than the .org website? 
I think the .com website was a lot more interesting than the .org website. I think this is because the .org is just giving information about an organization, and this is not a very large organization. the .com website is made by professionals and a place like Disney that has a lot of money. .org is made to inform you and not to entertain its very basic compared to the Disney website.

 
2. Why do you think the Disney website has more hyperlinks, advertisements, and other distracting options to click on?
yes I think it does because a lot of people know that this website is visited by thousands of people. due to the fact that its very popular, people want to be advertised. Companies are willing to pay a lot of money to be advertised with such popular websites.


3. If you had to construct/create your own webpage from the beginning, what would you want it to be about and why?
I think an interesting topic to do a website on would be DJ's there are many different aspects you can do It about. Such as raves, concerts and other events. You could include interesting videos or pictures,


4. How many programmers do you think would have to work with you to make your website possible? Would it seem impossible to construct/create a webpage by yourself? Why? 
I think it would be pretty hard to make a truly attractive website on my own. I would need other people who know how to add special features. By working with programmers I would have a much better website.



5. What would you want to name your website? Type that name into the web-address bar, is it taken already?

6. Explain why webpages with flash videos, images, and color take longer to load than pages with only text?
they take longer to load because all these cool features need more internet to load. Videos need a lot of internet connection to play properly. text is easier to load. This is why the special features need longer to load.

ART: a part of my life

I started painting since 2005 when I was about 6 years old, I consider art a very important part of my life. 
     
Throughout the time that I've been involved with art I have used many different techniques such as 
acrylics, oils, watercolor, pencils, pastels etc. But there are also many more which I like to explore here
I've used many unusual materials to complement my paintings such as 
rocks, sand, paper, glitter, tea bags, and tar
which is sometimes used to fix pavement. 
Whenever I'm looking for new ideas i like to look through WeHeartIt.

My favorite technique is acrylics! but when it comes to making paintings of things that need subtle blending I much rather use oil paints!

New York Times Article

1. What problems does the article mention that children run into when they use search engines?
A problem that kids face using search engines is that they ask questions directly. Instead of using keywords to look for their resources they don't word it right. This causes them to not get good quality answers or resources.

2. What suggestions have been offered for how search engines can improve their product to lessen children’s problems searching?
Search engines can help children by having voice activated search engines. Where it is more user friendly and understandable. Like this not only are all children helped to look for information but also they help kids with limited abilities.
3. Do you search using keywords or questions? How does the article characterize these two types of searching?
I search using keywords in order to get more desired and trusted resources, instead of forums. When you type in questions to google it is too wordy and it doesn't give you the desired results. when you use keywords it gives you sources that are more specific to your topic therefore making your search more effective.
4. Have you tried using images or videos to search? How does the article characterize this type of searching?
I have tried using images with the app google goggles and it is very effective because a lot of information comes out. This type of search is more user friendly and easier to understand. More children would be able to use it because its a lot simpler.

5. What advice would you give to Internet search engine developers (like Google or Bing) for how they should improve their product? Do you think any of the improvements mentioned in the article are particularly promising? Why?
advice I would give the developers of search engines is to not always put Wikipedia on top, to put more reliable sources first. an idea mentioned in the article that I liked was the using images to search for things. I think its a lot more user friendly and easier, therefore attracting more users.

Results of Online Polls

  1. Do you think the results are 100% accurate? Why or why not? Not everyone in the class answered my polls, therefore the results do not accurately represent the whole class. It may represent the partial opinion of the class but not exactly 100% accurate.
  2. How much of an impact do you think the wording of the questions has on the answers you received? The wording of the questions affect the results a lot. This is because with the word choice people will respond it differently due to the way they individually understand the question.
  3. Did you get the results you expected from your online polls? Why? I did not have an exact idea of what everybody would answer. The answers I did get though where the typical common ones that everybody knows. The answers were very similar in many of the questions.
  4. If you wanted to do an online poll with the students of Tecnologico de Monterrey asking them how much time and effort they spent doing homework this year, what are the steps you would take to complete that online poll? First of all you would need for the year to end in order to know the total amount of time spent in the year. Then consider the usual amount og homework received, the capacity or speed of the students, and then possibly the subject and level of difficulty of the homework.
  5. Do you think online polling could help the administration of Tec de Monterrey find out more about their students? Or do you think that the results would not be accurate? Why or why not? I think it could be a very effective way to find out information about the students as long as everybody participated and answered it. Also they need to take their time answering it and not just answer it with whatever answer to get it over with.
  6. How do you think the results of your polls would be different if you asked your classmates the questions in person? if we were to ask the questions in person the answers would be more accurate because we would be face to face with the person therefore getting their answers in that moment. they would right away think about it and reply.
  7. In what ways do you think online polling using Google Spreadsheets can be improved? Or was it easier to create an online poll than you originally thought? Explain I think it could be more user friendly, although it is a big advantage that it designs the poll on its own and all you do is put the words in. With other programs you would have to do all the work, design it, plus write in the things. therefore its easy to make them, also quick.

Assignment 5

1. In your own words describe how the workplace culture at Google encourages innovation and unique creations for the company? How does working at Google and the environment there affect its workers? working at Google encourages innovation in the workers because it lets their minds explore different new things and stray from the stress of being at a normal work office, it is easier for them to come up with new innovative ideas when the mind is not stressed. the fact that the workplace is fun makes the workers be excited to go to work and be happy to come up with new ideas instead of working forcefully.

2. How does employee freedom, like the 20% of free time Google encourages its employees to spend on any project they want, deliver better business? it delivers better business because the workers have their mind free and ready to work, its not packed with other stressful thoughts. They are happy to come up with new ideas and are encouraged to think of new, different things.


3. What are the requirements to work for Google? And what is different about the way they hire employees at Google? Requirements to work at Google are having unique ideas, being innovative and having the desire to work and make Google successful. They look more at the persons unique ideas and excitement to work rather than the background they have.

 5. In your own words discuss how Google's constantly refined search algorithm changed the way we all access and even think about information.
it changes the way we access information because now we access information in a faster and easier way. instead of saying we need to research we say we need to Google it. the algorithms help us find many resources that may help our research and it opens wider information for us to use.

6. Take a look at the following story about Google's top secret data center. Now why would Google want to keep its server room as a secret?
Google keeps its server room a secret, because if it didn't it probably wouldn't be what it is today. not everyone has access to the server room. it is very well kept and secret, only critical employees have been permitted a peek inside, it has high tech security to keep other people from accessing it.



7. What are the benefits of working as a Google employee?
access to hightech objects, free food, free medical service, free massages, covered with travel insurance and emergency assistance, New parents get time off and some extra spending money to help them welcome their new bundle of joy,Googlers get legal advice at no cost.


8. Name at least 5 different positions at Google (ex: software engineer, Google tester, interaction designer) and describe what they do?

  •  field engineering-Provide input from the field on revisions to proposed construction, Review and understand network designs
  • network engineer- Rack and stack, install, commission and test routers, transport (DWDM) equipment, and other network devices in new and existing network nodes across Google's global network (travel domestically up to 50%).
  • sofware engineer in test- Analyze and decompose a complicated software system and design a strategy to test this system

  • crisis response- develop tools like google public alerts, google person finder and google crisis map.
  • google flu and dengue trends- used to show disease activity in near real-time  and calculates level of dengue activity for that area
  • google for nonprofits- program offers approved nonprofit organizations access to exclusive google products and resources to expand their  impact. 



10. Look at the following story about why recent college graduates should not work for Google. Why does the writer argue recent graduates should not work at Google?
in this article it says that recent graduates should not work at Google because by working in this large company they don't have that idea to make their own business or be at a high position, they think its enough to be an employee at this huge corporation. Innovation is necessary and the recent graduates aren't considering to take initiative to make their own business once they work for Google.


11. How is Google the same or different than other search engines, like Yahoo or Bing?
Yahoo,Bing and Google are all search engines, however, google is a search engine that will focus on your interests it processes the information in order to give you more specific results. also google has more tools and wider options to use. it offers more relevant sources in order to make research easier and faster.

The difference between analog and digital:In analog technology, a wave is recorded or used in its original form.In digital technology, the analog wave is sampled at some interval, and then turned into numbers that are stored in the digital device.

Random Access Memory (RAM) -This is the instant memory the computer uses to run the applications that are open. the more RAM the computer has, the more things it can do at any one time. It is the combination of the RAM and processor that dictates the speed of the computer


Read-Only Memory (ROM) -
memory read at high speed but not capable of being changed by program instructions.

World Wide Web –an information system on the Internet that allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another.

Data (computer) – Distinct pieces of information, usually formatted in a special way. All software is divided into two general categories: data and programs. Programs are collections of instructions for manipulating data.

Program - An organized list of instructions that, when executed, causes the computer to behave in a predetermined manner. Without programs, computers are useless

Hypertext – A special type of database system, invented by Ted Nelson in the 1960s, in which objects (text, pictures, music, programs, and so on) can be creatively linked to each other.

Hardware – Refers to objects that you can actually touch, like disks, disk drives, display screens, keyboards, printers, boards, and chips

Software – Software means computer instructions or data. Anything that can be stored electronically is software.

Title (resource) – The name by which the resource is formally known

Creator (resource) – The person, organization or service who made the content of the resource, for instance, the writer of an article or the photographer who took a picture.

Subject (resource) -One of the topics of the resource. It is usual to choose keywords from an accepted classification scheme as the subject.

Publisher (resource) -The publisher is “responsible for making the resource available”. This might be a commercial publisher, an academic institution or an individual.


 Contributor (webpage) – A person or organization that has contributed to the content.

Format (resource) -The type of media of the resource

MP3 – a means of compressing a sound sequence into a very small file, to enable digital storage and transmission.

Cyberbully-involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others.


Database-
a structured set of data held in a computer, esp. one that is accessible in various ways.

Assignment 4

1. Discuss what the main idea of the video is?
The main idea of the video is to inform the audience about how different the generation we are living in today is from the past generations. Also it is meant to show us how different the pace of life is in the different places in the world. It makes us realize how our pace of life influences our quality of life and the one who surround us.

 2. Do you see yourself as past oriented or future oriented? Why?
I see myself more future oriented than past oriented. How I can tell that I am future oriented is because everything I do in the present I make sure that it will affect me in a positive way in the future. I don't find past experiences worthless though, I still keep them in my mind but I give more importance to my future.

 3. Do you agree or disagree with the speaker in the video? Explain why? 
I agree with the speaker of this video because when I think about the things he said it made me realize that our generations are both improving but loosing many values at the same time. He mentions how American families are decreasing the time they spend together, and how teenagers are dropping out of school because they get upset when they cant control everything like in videogames and society continues to fall apart due to our dependence on technology.

 4. Do you agree with the speaker's view that young adults' minds are being "digitally rewired"? Explain your answer.
I do believe that teenager's minds are being digitally rewired by technology. they make us get used to being the controller of everything therefore when we are sent out to the new world we cant stand having to be ordered and not having everything our way. We get wired into the 'My way or the highway' mindset.

 5. Why does the narrator in the video argue that young people dislike a single-function device such as a wristwatch?  
Young people dislike single-function devices such as the wristwatch because we are used to utilizing devices that are multi-functional and make our life a lot easier. We are too lazy to even do a simple thing such as figuring out the time on a watch that is not digital. this is upsetting because we want everything to be easy and done with no effort.


 1. Why did Sir Tim Berner's Lee decide to make the World Wide Web free when he created it at CERN?
He decided to make the World Wide Web free when he created it so that every single person around the world could have access to it. The fact that it is available to everyone makes us free and communicated with other people. If they charged for the Web many people would not be able to use it and be informed about the happenings in the world.

 2. What are the benefits of having "web addresses," an idea that Sir Tim Berner's Lee created?
The benefits of having Web Addresses are that it is easier for a person to access the desired web page. If we had to use the code it would be a lot of more work having to memorize each code for the desired web page.

 3. How does the World Wide Web allow people from all over the world to communicate?
It allows everyone all over the world to communicate because by using the internet we can communicate with people that are all around the world. The web is available to everyone, but we have to pay for the internet but with it we have many advantages in the touch of our fingertips.

 4. Why is it important to link information? What are the benefits of having instant access to information?
 It is important to link information because we are able to access it more quickly without having to look for the web page again. The benefits of having access to the information is that it encourages people to do it due to the fact that it takes less effort.

In my everyday life I use my phone, it is a smartphone so on it I can check Facebook and my email, text, make calls and take pictures it is really easy to use because it fits in the palm of my hand and it gives me easy access whenever and wherever I want.
